The Secret of Our Dreams

Dreams are pictures, sounds and feelings that happen during sleep. In the course of history people have had many explanations for dreams. In ancient Greece dreaming was thought to be a kind of contact with the gods. Sometimes they were regarded as signs of what may happen in the future.

Theories of Dreaming

Over the past many dream theories have emerged. The most famous expert on dreaming was Sigmund Freud, an Austrian doctor. At the end of the 19th century he found out that a part of our brain is the subconscious . Our mind keeps everything that we might want but cannot have there. It is a place where we keep our desires and wishes . In dreams we act out these wishes.

Dreams and Sleep

Our sleep is divided into five stages. In the first stage we do not sleep very deeply and we wake up easily. During the following stages our sleep gets deeper and deeper. After the fourth stage REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep begins. During this phase our heart rate and breathing gets faster. Blood pressure goes up and the brain starts to work but the body does not. That is why we don’t act out our dreams because the body is inactive.

Most dreaming occurs in this phase. There can be up to seven such REM phases in one night.

What happens in dreams?

Dreaming is an activity of the brain. It produces electrical waves which can be measured with an electroencephalograph. Dreams occur when brain waves are especially fast.

Everyone dreams. If you think that you never dream, you are wrong. Most of the time we cannot remember our dreams. Theorists say that we dream mostly about the thoughts and wishes that we repress . Others say that if dreaming is not so intense it is difficult to remember them anyway. Another reason may be that dreams are never the same, they have to be repeated in order for us to remember them.

Most people cannot control their dreams, they just happen. Very few people experience lucid dreaming. They can control what happens in their dreaming while they are asleep.

Even blind people dream. They may see images of events that they have experienced before they became blind. On the other hand a person who was born blind does not see pictures in dreams, but they can hear, smell and taste in them.

People often have the same dreams over and over again. They may be events in your life that have caused problems which you have not solved yet. Nightmares are dreams that are so terrible that you usually wake up. There is medical treatment for nightmares. You can go to therapists who try to find out why you have nightmares and how to deal with them.

Common Dreams

Some experts think that dreams are full of symbolic messages that mean something which is deep inside us. Here are a few popular dreams and how you could interpret them:

·         Being naked in public
In a dream we sometimes
realize that we are completely naked. This may mean that there is something to hide.

·         Falling
Almost everyone has
experienced falling from a place high up. Then suddenly they wake up. This may mean that something is out of control and you cannot stop it. It also may mean that you have failed in something that you have done, like your work or at school.

·         Being chased
Many people dream of someone chasing them, a very
frightening dream. It symbolizes running away from problems that you may have.

·         Flying
Flying dreams often mean that you are in control of things. You are very
strong-willed and can observe everything . It is often a symbol of having success.

  1. It is very interesting and philosophical article. I think this is a special science which is not explored totally. I don't think that dreams are results of our subconscious because I see a lot of dreams about issues I have not thought before. I prefer to sleep deeply and not to have dreams. Because I believe in them and sometimes I am afraid of them. There are several sings in my dreams that have influence on my real life. For example: If I see soap that means I should be very careful. If I see my friend of university it means I will receive money. However every evening before sleeping I ask God not to see any dreams.

  2. I love to see dreams. Really, nobody couldn't say where they come from and who sent it to us. But generally it show us our future and I believe them. And I'm even afraid of them because they are true to me. Sometimes when I see bad and terrible dreams I wake up and say it's nice that it was dream. I often see a color dreams and they are so beautiful that I don't want to get up. Sometimes I think I can recollect them but vain. At least it's good that you see dreams because it means that you continue to live.

Thank you Miss Sevan for this opportunity, it's will help as to improve our English.
There are so meny opinions about dreams.Someone believes that the soul, or some part of it, moves out from the body of the sleeping person and actually visits the places and persons the dreamer sees in their sleep or that during sleep, the devil could fill the human mind with corrupting and harmful thoughts.
I dream almost every night and usually I see prophetic dreams. For example, if I see someone in my dream, thats mean that in the next day something is going to happen to this man, or I will heared about it. By the way, returning to the above I would like to say, that I have only one stage of dream - deep :)
Apologize for mistakes, Miss Sevan please dont judge strictly :)
    Regards Ani

  5. I think dream is a very interesting and surprising phenomenon that happens to us. Dreams are different. In part, I agree with the theory that dreams are the result of our subconscious. As we often dream about what we think a lot. But, on the other hand, we often dream about anything, that we have never seen or never thought before. So, this kind of dreams can’t be the result of our subconscious. Anyway, I Love such dreams. Sometimes when I suddenly wake up and my such a dream is interrupted I try to sleep again to know what will happen next. I don't afraid of dreams, because I don't have nightmares and my dreams are usually positive. Even when I have a bad dream it doesn’t bother me, because my dreams never come true. And besides that, it makes me happy when I wake up after such a dream and realize that it was just a dream.
    Good night and sweet dreams!!!

  6. Christians say, that dreams have 3 sourses
1.dreams are mostly began from our life experienses
2.some of them from God, they mean something
3.some of them from the devil

But we can't recognise if the dream from God or devil, only saint people can explain dreams. It's the reason I don't care about dreams. I only enjoy them.

  8. Dreams are very important part of my life. I have always seen colorful and exciting dreams. One more thing, usually I can control it. It's like creating a short film and you are free to decide what can happen after this or that moment. It's a really cool opportunity to improve your creative skills. Yes I like it, especially when I'm flying or eating something very tasty.
It's true that you see dreams about something what worry you, even if you aren't thinking about it in real life. How much information have stored in our subconscious during our lives?
One interesting thing what I heard. Sometimes when the people wake up from the coma, they can do things what they had never done. For example speak new language or word for word remember the books that they have read, things, which were saved in the subconscious . I have read about a cleaner in court, who could remember legislation by rote. He had just heard it during work but his subconscious had saved it.

  10. A very interesting article. I read with excitement. I remembered Armenian holiday called St. Sargis. In that time unmarried girls eat salins cakes at bedtime. They should not be drink the water. After they must go to bed. If they see a boy who give them water, it mean that this man is their future husband and they get married in that year. This is a very cheerful holiday. At all I belive that the dreams can warn about the dangers , success or they can mean nothing. Everyone must know what mean his or her dreams and when they must pay attention to dreams.
